PRODUCT AND TECHNOLOGY NEWS
For a very thorough review of Apple's new eMate product, read
the mobilis magazine (http://www.volksware.com/mobilis) feature, "A Month in the Life of an eMate 300." In this article,
author Scott Andress says, "The bottom line? The eMate is an impressive,
elegant computing device. It is the most 'insanely great' product
that Apple has produced since the original Macintosh. It blurs
the line between PDA and notebook. It really is a piece of art--gorgeous
to look at and a dream to use. The design and engineering that
went into the ergonomics and functionality of the eMate are apparent
as soon as you turn it on. The eMate, and its descendants, offer
the potential for success for the newly spun-off Newton Inc."

Apple Computer Europe has announced the "Hack-a-Mac" Internet
Server contest at Imprinta, Europe's biggest publishing trade
fair. Hack-a-Mac entrants are challenged to modify the content
of the "Try Me" page located on these Global Access Internet Server
web sites:
The most successful hacker will win a new Apple PowerBook 3400c
computer. Rules and conditions of the competition are also listed
at the above sites.
"Attacks on web servers, typically designed to modify or destroy
information on company home pages, are increasing," says Willem
Poterman, manager of Apple Europe's Server Product Marketing department.
"Many companies have already had their web sites cracked and are
seeking to optimize the security of their lifeline information
systems. This can be costly in terms of additional time, investment
in new hardware, software, and consultant fees. The Hack-a-Mac
contest is designed to prove that with a standard Mac OS server
configuration, equipped with the standard Apple Internet Server
Solution, customers do not require additional security."
The Global Access Hack-a-Mac contest will run from June 4 to July
31, 1997. During this time, competition entrants can attempt to
hack the Global Access "Try Me" page as often as they wish. A
complete article on this contest is posted at this web site:

From June 1 to July 15, 1997, VirTech Communications is challenging
the global "hacker" community to bypass the security of its Macintosh
World Wide Web server. Similar contests have been conducted in
the United States and Sweden, but VirTech's challenge is unique
in that it addresses popular Internet security issues that are
plaguing the media today. By launching the challenge, VirTech
wants to overturn the notion that the Internet is vulnerable to
credit card number snatching.
Additionally, VirTech wants to prove its server can withstand
vandalism attacks like the ones against the NASA and CIA web servers.
The rules are simple and the prize is big. The first hacker to
successfully attack the server--that is, break into it, snatch
the credit card number, and change the phrase found on the page--will
win a hefty Canadian C$ 10,000 prize (or an equivalent U.S.$ 7,500
prize). The Macintosh server that VirTech employs has in no way
been modified; VirTech has not installed security software to
strengthen its firewall and protect the server. The server is
running Apple Internet Server Solution 2.0, an Internet network
suite of products that consists of Starnine Technologies' WebStar
1.3.2 server software, and several prepackaged CGIs (common gateway
interfaces). You can obtain detailed contest rules from the Vanhacking
Challenge web site:

From June 15 to September 15, Script Software International is
running a contest that anyone can enter to win up to U.S.$ 500.
Entrants need to write a tool that can be used within Script Software's
CopyPaste program to perform a helpful function on Mac OS Clipboard
contents. CopyPaste, the shareware utility that magnifies the
Clipboard in different ways, has been popular among web developers,
editors, writers, and publishing professionals.
Script Software is holding the contest to heighten awareness that
the Mac OS is the best platform for application integration. The
company also aims to promote greater use, understanding, and programming
of utilities that work with the Clipboard. Some entry ideas might
include graphics filters; lexical analyzers; mathematical calculators;
date converters for Jewish or Arabic calendars; programmers' helpers
for hexadecimal-to-decimal-to-binary conversions; Internet tools
that can act on site addresses listed in the Clipboard; encryption/decryption
tools, and picture and icon tools.
You can download CopyPaste from this web site:
The CopyPaste programmer's toolkit, which includes source code
examples, can be found here:
All submitted source code will be published on the Script Software
site as freeware. The top three utilities will be included in
future versions of CopyPaste, and all those who enter a working
function key tool will be given a registered version of CopyPaste.
Script Software will announce all winners and describe their accomplishments
to the media and on the company's web site.
For more details, contact Peter Hoerster at hoerster@muenster.de or Julian Miller at .
